Herbert E. Troughton, 81 years old, of Champion, died, Friday, December 4, 2009, at Washington Square Nursing Home.
He was born January 28, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio a son of the late Herbert P. Troughton and the late Hilda Teske Troughton.
Herbert was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, having served in both WWII and the Korean War. He was awarded numerous medals, including the Purple Heart and was the Grand Marshall of the 1951 Armed Forces Day Parade in Cleveland, Ohio.
He had worked as a Post Office Clerk in Warren and was a member of American Legion - Cortland Post #540 and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
Herbert was also a member of the Champion Athletic Club and was the club treasurer for 17 years. He was a member of the Champion Football Boosters Club and was instrumental in the founding of the Champion Basketball, Baseball and girls softball booster clubs. He also was instrumental in the transformation of the old Champion bus garage into a training facility for boys baseball and girls softball.
In 1975 Mr. Troughton was awarded the Bill Downs Memorial Award for services rendered to the Champion Athletic Club. In 1989 he was the 2nd person from Trumbull County to be inducted into the Ohio Hotstove Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1999 was recognized by the Warren Sports Hall of Fame for his contributions in enhancing athletics in the Champion Township.
Surviving are two sons, Herbert E. Troughton of Champion and Stephen Lee Troughton of Champion; two daughters, Mrs. Eugenia (Scott) Seywert of Ventura, California and Mrs. Mary Lou (Larry) Haller of Cortland. Also surviving is a brother, Edward Troughton of Twinsburg, Ohio and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters
Military graveside services will be held on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at the Meadow Brook Memorial Park where the American Legion Trumbull County Honor Guard will conduct services.
The family will receive friends from 10 AM - 11 AM at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home before processing to the cemetery for interment.
